I'm Breaking Up With Android

I have been a die hard Android fan boy since the dawn of my phone owning existence (Moto Droid 2 in 2010). At first I was barred from the iPhone experience because my carrier was not AT&T, but even when their exclusive grip on Apples offerings was relinquished, I never jumped ship.

I believe part of my love affair with Google's operating system is the fact that I have almost always had a nearly vanilla experience with each device I have owned. My history goes like this- Moto Droid 2, LG G2x, HTC One S, LG Nexus 4, and finally the LG Nexus 5. Looking back on this list I see that I am most likely a rarity in that I have never purchased a Samsung device, but rather have had an LG on three separate occasions.

Android is exciting. It's ever changing. It's powerful. It's customize-able to point that you can make it look exactly like an iPhone or Window's phone. Google's service are amazing. From Maps to Gmail there is no fault from Mountain View from a 1st Party usability standpoint.

With the introduction of Android Wear the excitement grew even more. The first generation devices are just that- first gen and generally unpolished work in progress/proof of concept. I actually ordered a Moto 360 day one, only to return it after one week, but I'll save that story for a later day.

After almost 5 years defending Android as the superior mobile operating system, I'm moving to Apple. I haven't even owned an iPod (Zune ftw). The move will be jarring but I believe it is the right decision. Apple just does things right and does them right on the first time (mostly cough Maps cough).

My decision isn't out of right field, I have been contemplating the move ever since the rumors of a big screen phone surface earlier this year. That was the only thing holding me back, there is no way I could have moved to a phone with a 4 inch screen after using the nearly 5 inch Nexus 5. I believe that phone hardware is plateauing. Its no secret that the iPhone 6's hardware is nearly identical to that of the Samsung Galaxy S3 that was release almost 2 and a half years ago, but that's not what's important.

Apple makes the most of the hardware they use and they have some of the best services available- iMessage alone is a large reason for jumping ship. You never have to worry if an App is available or not, because developers are making a very bad mistake if they ignore iOS and they know that.

All of that isn't to say I won't miss Android. I'll keep my Nexus 5 mainly because I have a Chromecast and AllCast is one of the most useful apps I have ever used. I'll get a sim adapter that will allow me to switch back and forth at my leisure- that is until I get a group message or want to have the ability to take a decent picture.

Goodbye Android, we had a great run and I'm hoping we can stay friends.
